Stamp Price Rise: "If we wanted to kill the mail, we couldn't do it any differently," warns the monthly magazine "Que Choisir"

"Perhaps one day the question will arise as to whether we will continue to sell stamps," said Arnaud de Blauwe, editor-in-chief of the magazine, on Tuesday on franceinfo. The price of the green stamp will increase from 1.39 to 1.52 euros in early 2026.

"If we wanted to kill the mail, we wouldn't do it any differently," said Arnaud de Blauwe, editor-in-chief of the monthly magazine Que choisir , on franceinfo on Tuesday, July 29, as a new increase was added to a series of annual increases. The price of the green stamp will increase by 13 cents at the start of 2026, going from 1.39 to 1.52 euros.
According to him, "La Poste is still facing a dilemma. Historically, it was there to deliver letters. But in recent years, the French have been sending fewer and fewer letters to each other. We are now favoring digital exchanges."
For years, regular increases in the price of stamps have been piling up : "Today, sending a letter is expensive, but La Poste has accustomed us to this pace. For years and years now, the increases it has imposed have been quite significant." The price of the green stamp crossed a symbolic threshold, rising from 1.39 euros to 1.52 euros. "To give you an idea, it's now practically more expensive than the price of a coffee at a counter in Paris."
For Arnaud de Blauwe, this trend calls into question the very sustainability of the mail service: "La Poste is now dragging mail around like a ball and chain. Year after year, traffic is decreasing, and mail-related revenue is decreasing. We have to compensate with extremely sharp increases. Perhaps one day the question will arise as to whether we will continue to sell stamps."
